4.0.2 The program provides its most recent year of summary data and outcomes for the assessment of each of the identified competencies, specifying the percentage of students achieving program benchmarks for each program option.

4.0.3 The program uses Form AS 4(B) and/or Form AS 4(M) to report its most recent assessment outcomes for each program option to constituents and the public on its website and routinely up-dates (minimally every 2 years) its findings.  

All Council on Social Work Education programs measure and report student learning outcomes.  Students are assessed on their mastery of the competencies which comprise the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education.  These competencies are dimensions of social work practice which all social workers are expected to master during their professional training.  A measurement benchmark is set by the social work programs for each competency.  An assessment score at or above that benchmark is considered by the program to represent mastery of that particular competency.

The MSW Foundation Competencies are measured with the Social Work Education Assessment Project Foundation Curriculum Instrument.  Data was collected for students enrolled in the final semester of the foundation year.  Overall, the report indicates that foundation students continue to score slightly higher than the national norm for the assessment.  They continue to demonstrate competency in knowledge and skill for competencies 1, 2, 3, and 6-9.  The two areas that are consistently under benchmark for competency are research and policy practice.  The field evaluation instrument is used for the measure of observed competencies at foundation level, and students have performed at higher levels in field practicum than is demonstrated in their curriculum assessment.  Students met or exceed benchmark in all competencies with the exception of research and policy practice.  The program has engaged in consistent assessment and evaluation and revision of curriculum and practicum to address the policy and research performance areas.  It is noteworthy that students improve in both research and policy practice during the specialization year and final practicum.

The specialization is a clinical concentration, and it is measured with the final field evaluation instrument in the final semester of the program.  Additionally, the second measure is taken from the Comprehensive Clinical Examination that evaluates the mastery of the 9 competencies, along with the six clinical objectives of the program that encompass the clinical competencies.  The measure of competency is taken from the first sitting of the exam, completed during the final semester of the program, although students can revise the exam twice for purposes of the examination.  Clinical concentration students are evaluated as exceeding competency in all areas except policy practice, but this is improving.  Revisions were made in the method of field evaluations in order to better prepare students for both practice evaluation and policy practice.  The aggregate score for policy practice for the past 3 competency exams (Spring 2018, Summer 2018, and Fall 2018) indicated students have shown improvement in policy competency.  Students have also shown important gains in evaluation of practice effectiveness and this competency exceeded benchmark for the first time.

The MSW faculty will embark on curriculum assessment and strategic planning for the purpose of curriculum and program development proposals to enhance student learning outcomes.
